About the Industry

Have you ever wondered what’s really like being a model? Or have you ever thought about being a model? I have the low down for you.

Things to know

1. As an aspiring model you need to know what your best features are and learn how to flaunt them. Inspect your face,  free of make up, with your hair pulled back. Ask your self the following, what is interesting about your face? Do you have full lips? Nice cheek bones? A gap in your teeth? Any of these can be advantageous when it comes to being remembered by casting agents.

2. Know your poses and angles and start building your portfolio.

3. If you want to be a model, like in any other industry, you need someone in your corner who can help guide your career. That’s where agents come in. They can help you refine your book, set up castings or auditions, and help direct your career.

*it’s advisable to join a modelling agency. That’s a company that represents fashion models to work in the fashion industry. These agencies earn their income via commission, usually from the deal they make with the model / or the head agency. They invest money into developing their talent so they can increase their status within the industry.

4. Modelling/acting is similar to a business, you must know how to deal with people, always remember you are selling your talent/skills/looks, so always keep your rates high.

This is what Kian Degenaar from Sync Model Management had to say:

 a). Invest in yourself

We all know its not easy pulling out big amounts of money for photographers and lighting, but you need to see yourself as a brand, and you need  to start investing in yourself because this is the only way your brand can grow.

b). New Jobs will always come along  Sometimes you do not get selected at Castings and that is okay! You need to understand that maybe you weren’t suitable for the job, but a new  job will always come along so don’t give up because maybe the next one will be yours.

C). Focus on what makes you unique. You need to be different, expressive and stand out, from the crowd more than anything else, and that’s what makes people notice you. Find what makes you different and market this, post it on social media and make this your brand.

 d). Network!

This is probably the most important. Networking is how we get around in this industry, start by attending events and socialise because you  don’t know how much most people can help you achieve your goals.

 e). Thick Skin

This industry is extremely competitive and not everyone will have the tough skin to make it but as long as you are true to who you are and  stream out people will take notice of the glow you hold within you.
