I’ve always been drawn to designs that are bold, colourful, one-of-a-kind, and daring – designs that push the boundaries of fashion. At the same time, I am totally obsessed with elegance and simplicity. So my all-time favourite designer has to be Laduma Ngxokolo, who could do all of the above.
Maxhosa by Laduma was founded and created by Laduma Ngxokolo. The celebrated knitwear designer is known for creatively fusing traditional Xhosa bead work aesthetics with modern tailoring techniques, using mohair and wool. Laduma’s Maxhosa celebrates the Xhosa people’s beauty, culture, language, and aspirations.
Since launching the luxury brand in 2011, Ngxokolo has been well received both locally and internationally. Maxhosa by Laduma is now being distributed around the world by distributors in New York, Japan, and London. Laduma’s work has been shown in Berlin, London, New York, and Paris, and he has dressed international celebrities ranging from Beyonce Knowles to Alicia Keys. Laduma’s accomplishments include the Vogue Italia Scouting for Africa award in 2015, the Next Dubai Award in 2015, and the Pride of Africa: Africa Fashion Week Barcelona Award, to name a few.
