Last week, South African Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2023 kicked off with the Mr Price Talent Search Designer Competition, showcasing several South African fashion designers. To close on a bang, a Mozambican fashion show was held on Saturday. Of all the stunning shows, we were particularly impressed with House of Rubicon’s presentation of their latest collection, which celebrates heritage and pays homage to the reimagined Myth of Origin story regarding the lost kingdom of Mapungubwe.

The Creative Director and Founder of Rubicon, Hangwani Nengovhela drew inspiration from the artifacts and landscapes discovered at the world heritage site for this twenty-one year old style and culture institution in South Africa’s fashion landscape. According to oral history, three brothers set out on a journey in which one decided to stay for the night – only to wake up to an awe-inspiring sight of the Mapungubwe landscape. This discovery led him to establish a kingdom that became an economic and cultural trading hub attracting various travelers from near and far – even Europe and Asia!

Nengovhela has envisioned how a young bride would have put together her wardrobe in Rubicon’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection. The look is romantic in structure but also includes flowing pieces; fabric selections contrast with color choices in order to capture how she would have combined her home culture with those of her new husband’s African heritage. Nengovhela expressed “We designed each garment so that wearers would feel emboldened, chic, and connected with their inner self”.
